Amazon’s 77,400-square-foot distribution center in the town of Pamelia is now operating after a delayed start, with delivery drivers recently leaving the Bradley Street Commerce Park facility for the first time.
The facility’s operations began about a week before the opening was reported. Amazon’s website lists the center as open. The facility was built by the Buffalo-based Montante Group and is leased to Amazon.
The project originally was expected to open in September. The reason for the delay has not been given. Earlier planning information described the site as a possible 24-hour operation with 100 to 150 workers. Later reports put staffing at about 150 workers, with additional seasonal positions possible during the holidays.
Amazon internally refers to the facility as WNY6. The Jefferson County Planning Board approved the site plan, and the Pamelia Town Planning Board granted site-plan approval. Construction began during the summer of the prior year.
Pamelia Town Supervisor Scott Allen previously called the project a positive for Jefferson County. The WorkPlace in Watertown had said in earlier reports that Amazon had not contacted the organization about recruitment assistance.
Amazon also opened a separate delivery station in Champlain in July. The company continues to list delivery-driver and package-handler opportunities for its operations, while some local delivery companies recruit independently for Amazon delivery work.
