Driver charged after 25 horses stopped on route to Canada

A Pennsylvania truck driver was charged after New York State Police stopped a truck carrying 25 horses in St. Lawrence County. The horses were reportedly headed to Canada for slaughter, and the case is described as the first arrest under New York’s 2024 law banning the sale and transport of horses for slaughter.

State police said the horses were taken to a veterinary clinic in Saratoga County. The driver was ordered to appear later in DeKalb Town Court. The research material said the horses may be placed for adoption and that the driver could face a $1,500-per-horse penalty because the charge was brought against an individual.
