Former Deferiet paper mill site cleared for redevelopment
The former St. Regis Paper Mill site in Deferiet has undergone demolition, waste removal and grading supported by a $300,000 National Grid grant.
The former St. Regis Paper Mill property in Deferiet has been prepared for possible redevelopment following demolition, waste removal and grading work supported by a $300,000 National Grid Brownfield Redevelopment Program grant awarded to the Development Authority of the North Country and Jefferson County in 2023.
The project included removing 17 buildings and about 28,000 tons of asbestos-containing material. Demolition began in April 2025 and took 10 months, while the property was also regraded to prepare it for future construction. The mill opened in 1901 and closed in 2004.
