Soldiers from Fort Drum’s 2nd Battalion, 14th Infantry Regiment, 10th Mountain Division, took part in the annual Mogadishu Mile remembrance run Oct. 2 at Fort Drum. The event honors 10th Mountain Division soldiers who served in Somalia and commemorates those who died during the mission.

The Battle of Mogadishu took place Oct. 3-4, 1993, in Mogadishu, Somalia. Eighteen U.S. soldiers were killed and 73 were wounded, according to a Fort Drum Army article. The 10th Mountain Division’s Task Force 2-14 was sent to help rescue Task Force Ranger, the raid force involved in the battle.

The remembrance run’s name refers to the movement out of the city after the battle, when vehicles were full and some soldiers had to continue on foot. Fort Drum tributes include Pfc. James Martin Jr. of the 2nd Battalion, 14th Infantry Regiment, and Sgt. Cornell Houston of the 41st Engineer Battalion. Martin Hall is named for Martin.

Retired U.S. Army Lt. Gen. Charles Pede also spoke with soldiers during the event about the battle and the significance of the Mogadishu Mile. Pede served as a captain during the 1993 battle and shared his experiences with the soldiers.

Fort Drum is home to the 10th Mountain Division, making the annual event part of the North Country installation’s continuing remembrance of soldiers who served in Somalia. The 2026 run has concluded.
