Gouverneur prepares for first Friday night football at new facility

Gouverneur Central School District is set to host South Jefferson under new field lights after years of Saturday games at the fairgrounds.

Gouverneur Central School District is preparing to host South Jefferson on Friday night at a new athletic facility. The Wildcats previously played Saturday afternoon games at the fairgrounds, according to the submitted information.

The facility includes a turf field, bleachers, a press box and four locker rooms. It is part of the district’s $57 million capital project approved in 2023. The facility itself, along with a new softball field and three additional grass practice fields, was reported as costing $12.36 million.

Nine teams are expected to use the facility during the school year, including football, soccer, outdoor track and cheer teams. The turf is also intended to help teams play in wet or snowy conditions.
