The Lewis County Warming Center is open each night in the lower level of the New Beginnings building in Lowville, offering overnight shelter during the cold-weather season. The center operates from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. daily through April 30.
The center is at 5499 Jackson Street and is funded by the Lewis County Department of Social Services. Northern Regional Center for Independent Living runs the facility and hires its staff.
Food is available, primarily shelf-stable items. The center also has a new kitchen, freezer and laundry machines. A shower and refrigerator were added last year. The improvements were funded through county support and community donations.
The center has operated for about four years. Lewis County and Northern Regional Center for Independent Living opened it in fall 2023, and the site moved that year from Bethel Church of the Nazarene to New Beginnings.
Jefferson County operates an overnight warming center at the Salvation Army and a daytime center at New Life Christian Church. Both opened Nov. 1. St. Lawrence County also has a warming center in Ogdensburg.
For assistance, the Lewis County Department of Social Services can be reached at 315-376-5400. The department's listed hours are 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. More information is available through the Lewis County Department of Social Services.
