A 70-year-old Massena man died after being struck by a vehicle on State Highway 37 in the town of Louisville on the night of Oct. 29, New York State Police said.

Troopers responded at about 8:10 p.m. for a reported motor vehicle-pedestrian collision. Police identified the pedestrian. He was pronounced dead at the scene after troopers and emergency personnel provided life-saving measures.

State Police said the man had reportedly been in the roadway collecting debris in an unlit area. A white 2021 Volkswagen traveling east struck him, according to police. The 22 year old driver, of Massena, stopped after the collision and contacted law enforcement.

An autopsy is scheduled, but the date and time have not been set. The investigation remains ongoing. State Police have not reported any charges or a cause of death.

Our hearts and prayers go out to the man's family and friends, and to everyone involved, during this very difficult time.

The 2024 preliminary figures from the New York Department of Motor Vehicles and Governor's Traffic Safety Committee list 289 pedestrian deaths statewide, compared with 307 in 2023. The figures are statewide and do not provide a North Country breakdown.

The Governor's Traffic Safety Committee advises pedestrians to be as visible as possible and recommends light-colored or reflective clothing after dark. It also advises drivers to watch for pedestrians.

Updates may come from State Police Troop B Public Information Officer Trooper Brandi M. Ashley. Accident reports can be requested through the State Police accident-report page, which says reports are generally available within 30 days but may take up to six weeks.
