Massena residents urge pause on proposed data center

Residents spoke for and against a proposed data center at a Massena Town Board meeting, while a petition calling for a three-year moratorium was presented.

Residents offered differing views on a proposed large-scale data center at the former Alcoa East site during a Massena Town Board meeting. Some raised concerns about water use, energy use, environmental effects and the project’s potential economic impact, while others said the town needs the revenue and development a data center could bring.

David Fenton presented a petition seeking a three-year moratorium on data centers. He said more than 475 people supported it and argued that the pause would allow time to study economic and environmental effects and develop regulations. The New York Digital Investment Group plans to expand an existing Bitcoin-mining operation at the site.
