Massena Central School District is preparing to begin the next phase of a $79.8 million capital project, with initial work planned at the high school during the December 2026 winter break. The state Education Department has approved the first phase of the project.
The first work areas are expected to include the fitness area, pool and boys’ locker room. Plans also call for dividing the girls’ locker room into two smaller locker rooms for students and student-athletes.
The project includes upgrades to the district’s HVAC control system and athletic complex, along with a boiler conversion, LED lighting, new bathrooms, a secure entrance at the main office and replacement of an air-handling unit. King & King Architects LLP is working on the next phase.
The project follows an earlier $49.6 million capital project that included major improvements at each elementary school, the junior high and the transportation facility. Voters approved the $79.8 million project in May.
The district solicited bids for the first phase, with submissions due Nov. 5 and openings scheduled that day in the high school auditorium. Board member Daniel Tusa said bid documents had been sent to contractors and that there was strong interest in the work.
The district expects another round of bids to open in January 2027. That work is scheduled to begin in June 2027, after final exams, with completion anticipated by the end of 2029.
The next regular Board of Education meeting is scheduled for Nov. 17, 2026, at 6:30 p.m. in the Massena High School auditorium, with a YouTube livestream planned. District Clerk Ashley Snyder can be reached at (315) 764-3700 ext. 3008. Meeting information is available on the Massena Central School District Board of Education page.
