Officer hospitalized after assault at Gouverneur correctional facility

A correction officer was hospitalized with serious injuries after an alleged assault involving two incarcerated individuals at Gouverneur Correctional Facility in Gouverneur on Wednesday, Aug. 26, according to the submitted research report. The injuries included broken ribs, broken teeth, a broken nose and facial lacerations.

A second correction officer reported lower back pain but remained on duty, the report said. The injured officer was evaluated at the facility before being taken to an area hospital for additional treatment. The incident reportedly began during an attempted pat frisk of an aggressive inmate, after which a second inmate allegedly struck the officer. The report said facility staff later used physical force and mechanical restraints to secure one of the individuals.
