Ogdensburg manager recommends $3 million shipyard for waterfront site
Ogdensburg’s city manager recommended a $3 million shipyard project for a former paper mill site, saying it would not cost taxpayers and could generate about $85,000 in annual property and sales tax revenue.
Ogdensburg City Manager Fonda Chronis recommended a proposal to develop the city’s vacant waterfront property, formerly the site of the Diamond National Paper Mill, into a $3 million shipyard. The proposed project would include boat storage, maintenance, retail and docking options.
The proposal comes from J.E. Sheehan Contracting Corporation of Potsdam. Chronis said the project was selected through a three-stage review of five applicants and estimated it could bring Ogdensburg about $85,000 in additional annual property and sales tax revenue without a cost to taxpayers. Some residents questioned the project’s potential job impact and whether a shipyard would be the best use for the property.
