The Potsdam Town Board is proposing a six-month pause on the construction, development or installation of commercial battery energy storage systems with capacities above 25 kilowatt-hours. The board approved a resolution proposing the moratorium on Sept. 18 and scheduled a public hearing for Oct. 13 at 4:30 p.m.
The proposal is intended to give town officials time to review safety measures, consult with fire officials and other agencies, and consider changes to the town’s existing law. No new permits would be issued during the moratorium, while previously approved permits would remain valid and work on those projects would continue. Residential systems not intended to sell stored energy would not be covered.
