St. Lawrence County reports 19 confirmed rabies cases this year
St. Lawrence County Public Health says 19 rabies cases have been confirmed this year, while Jefferson County reported two cases in August and none in July.
St. Lawrence County has recorded 19 confirmed rabies cases this year, including a stray cat from the Heuvelton area and a bat, county Public Health Director Erin Streiff said. The total exceeds the county’s combined number of confirmed cases over the previous five years.
Jefferson County reported no rabies cases in July and two in August, according to Jefferson County Public Health educator Lisa Lagos. County health officials say rabies can affect any mammal and that prompt treatment after a bite or scratch can prevent illness.
