SUNY Potsdam geoscientists Page Quinton and Michael Rygel have received a $411,477 National Science Foundation grant for a three-year study of ancient water chemistry preserved in sedimentary rocks across Atlantic Canada.
The project will examine rocks in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland. The research is intended to identify periods when marine water influenced the Maritimes Basin and provide information about conditions that shaped the evolution of life on land and the distribution of energy and mineral resources. The grant also will support paid research experiences for SUNY Potsdam undergraduates and provide teaching and research opportunities for future K-12 Earth science teachers.
