A bat in Gouverneur and raccoons in DeKalb and Oswegatchie tested positive for rabies, St. Lawrence County Public Health said Aug. 14.
The county has recorded 14 confirmed rabies cases in animals this year, compared with a historical average of fewer than three annually, according to state records. Public Health advises residents to keep pets and livestock vaccinated, avoid handling wild animals and contact the department at 315-386-2325 about possible exposures. Anyone bitten or scratched should wash the wound and seek medical attention.
