Madison County wind project hearings focus on proposed $30.4 million PILOT

Public hearings are scheduled in four Madison County towns about a proposed wind project with up to 18 turbines and a 20-year, $30.4 million payment-in-lieu-of-taxes agreement.

Updated

Public hearings are scheduled in Nelson, Fenner, Eaton and Smithfield on the proposed Hoffman Falls Wind project. The project, proposed by Liberty Renewables, could include up to 18 wind turbines, each 643 feet tall, across the four towns.

The hearings are scheduled for 5 to 6:30 p.m. and 6:45 to 8 p.m. on Monday in Nelson Town Hall and Fenner Town Hall, respectively. Two additional hearings are scheduled for the same times Tuesday in Eaton Town Hall and Smithfield Town Hall.

Hoffman Falls Wind, LLC, is seeking a payment-in-lieu-of-taxes agreement that would provide $30.4 million in tax relief over 20 years. The Madison County Board of Supervisors passed a resolution asking the county Industrial Development Agency to deny the agreement, citing the project's application and its projection of two permanent jobs. The IDA will decide after considering public feedback.
