Massena board debate centers on proposed NYDIG data center expansion

A Massena resident criticized the town board’s handling of a proposed NYDIG data center expansion during an Oct. 5 budget meeting, while a board member said the project remains under environmental review.

Discussion of the proposed NYDIG data center expansion at the former Alcoa East plant took over a Massena Town Board meeting held Oct. 5 to review the tentative 2027 budget. A resident criticized the board’s handling of the proposal and raised concerns about legal costs, jobs and potential long-term environmental and health effects.

The board voted 3-2 last month against a six-month moratorium on data centers. Deputy Supervisor Sam Carbone and board members Adrian Taraska and Jared Hollander voted against it; Supervisor Ray Lancto and board member Kristy Baker-Dubrey supported it. Carbone said the project remains under environmental review and that the town is still waiting for the state Department of Environmental Conservation’s response.
