Firefighters from several departments in Jefferson and Lewis counties were called to the scene at about 2:45 a.m. Natural Bridge 1st Assistant Chief Mark Flint said crews found the rear of the building engulfed in flames when they arrived.
The fire was extinguished in about 15 minutes. The rear of the home was destroyed, while the rest of the building sustained heavy smoke and water damage.
The seven residents who escaped included children ages 10, 14 and 16. Two pets, a cat and a dog, died in the fire. The cause remains under investigation.
