The law also voids existing 287(g) agreements between local agencies and federal authorities. Jefferson, Franklin and Lewis counties had not sought such agreements, while St. Lawrence County was working toward an agreement with Immigration and Customs Enforcement when the law passed. The lawsuit is the second legal challenge to the law; the federal government has also challenged it.
