Ogdensburg schedules hearing on possible property tax cap override

Ogdensburg plans a Sept. 28 public hearing on a measure that would authorize the city to exceed the state property tax levy cap if needed, although officials said they do not expect to use it.

Ogdensburg will hold a public hearing at 6 p.m. Sept. 28 at City Hall on a proposed local law related to the state property tax levy cap. The measure would authorize the city to exceed the cap if necessary, but officials said it does not itself increase the property tax levy or commit the city to exceeding the limit.

The city must adopt the measure after the hearing for it to take effect. Officials said the step is precautionary and is intended to protect the city if an error or emergency affects its tax-cap calculations.
