Potsdam students face phased changes to New York graduation rules
New York is changing the role of Regents exams and moving toward a single diploma as part of a phased graduation system beginning with future graduating classes.
New York’s graduation requirements are scheduled to change in phases. Students graduating this school year will follow the current rules, while members of the class of 2028 will no longer need to pass a specific set of Regents exams to earn a diploma, Potsdam Central School District Superintendent Jerry Griffin said.
Regents exams will continue to measure student progress, but the state is moving toward a single diploma instead of separate Local, Regents and Regents with Advanced Designation diplomas. New credit requirements are scheduled to begin with the class of 2031, followed by a broader competency-based system for the class of 2033. Griffin said Potsdam will review its local Portrait of a Graduate and strategic plan as the district prepares for the changes.
