Schumer pushes for Fort Drum to host Army's Project Janus nuclear reactor

U.S. Sen. Charles E. Schumer, D-N.Y., is asking the Department of Defense to pick Fort Drum as the site for Project Janus, the Army's next-generation nuclear power project. Schumer said he sent a formal letter to the department requesting the north country post be chosen from the nine locations on the Army's shortlist, according to a report by the Watertown Daily Times. Project Janus began in late 2025 and identified nine Army posts in the continental United States that could host a small modular nuclear reactor to provide a steady, constant supply of power. The Army's stated goal is to have a nuclear power plant operating by September 2038. In his letter, Schumer argued that Fort Drum's facilities, personnel and infrastructure suit the project, and that the post needs reliable, independent onsite power, according to the report.
