St. Lawrence County gets waiver to continue some child care assistance
A waiver allows St. Lawrence County to continue some child care assistance while state funding remains insufficient to serve all eligible families.
St. Lawrence County’s Department of Social Services can continue child care assistance for some families under a newly approved waiver, while funding for the program remains limited.
The waiver applies to families who, at recertification, are experiencing homelessness, have income below 300% of the State Income Standard, or have children with special needs. Families who do not meet those priorities may be placed on a waiting list if funding is unavailable. The same may occur for eligible families applying for assistance for the first time.
The county’s Child Care Assistance Program helps eligible families pay for care while they work, attend school or take part in other qualifying activities. State funding is projected to remain insufficient, and the county has previously denied benefits to some families because of the shortage.
