Watertown church stabilized after $130,000 in structural grants

The Thomas Memorial AME Zion Church in Watertown was stabilized with two grants totaling $130,000, but its future use remains undecided.

WatertownCommunity

The Thomas Memorial AME Zion Church on Morrison Street in Watertown has been stabilized after Neighbors of Watertown received two grants totaling $130,000 for structural repairs. Much of the work focused on the church tower, including construction of a new concrete wall inside the structure.

The church has not been used for services since 2012. Additional repairs are still needed, including broken windows, but no plans have been made for that work. Possible future uses include a museum, a historic landmark or an active congregation. The church has ties to the Underground Railroad.
