The American Red Cross declared a national blood supply crisis on July 27, 2026, its second such declaration. The organization said supplies of type O blood distributed to hospitals were being limited. Earlier in the year, the Red Cross declared a severe shortage in January and an emergency shortage in June.
The Red Cross said donations reached a four-year summer low after extreme heat, poor air quality and foodborne illness affected collections. Donations later began to rise, but the organization said additional donors were still needed.
Appointments can be made through the Red Cross Blood Donor App, RedCrossBlood.org or by calling 1-800-RED CROSS at 1-800-733-2767. Donors should check the Red Cross Find a Drive tool for current availability and times before attending.
