SNAP changes could add millions in costs for three North Country counties
Leaders from Jefferson, Lewis and St. Lawrence counties say proposed SNAP cost changes could create more than $12 million in annual expenses by 2028.
Leaders from Jefferson, Lewis and St. Lawrence counties say changes to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program could shift more than $2.1 million a year in administrative costs to the three counties. The changes would reduce the federal share of those costs from 50% to 25%, officials said.
County leaders also estimate that potential penalties tied to SNAP error rates could add $10.1 million annually. They are asking for the cost shifts to be delayed and for New York state to help cover the expenses.
