Tri-county officials urge action over planned SNAP cost changes

Administrators from Jefferson, Lewis and St. Lawrence counties are urging action over federal changes that would increase counties’ share of SNAP administrative costs.

Administrators from Jefferson, Lewis and St. Lawrence counties are urging the public to contact elected officials about changes to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, included in the federal One Big Beautiful Bill.

Beginning Oct. 1, the federal share of SNAP administrative costs is set to fall from 50% to 25%. Counties would then be responsible for 75% of those costs, shifting an estimated $165 million in federal responsibility to New York state. The issue was discussed Friday by Jefferson County Administrator Ryan Piche, Lewis County Manager Timothy Hunt and St. Lawrence County Administrator Ruth Doyle.
